TAUC Leadership Conference 2010 Wrap-up

The TAUC Leadership Conference, held May 11-14 in Phoenix, Ariz., was a success on several levels. Not only did attendees enjoy two days' worth of high-level presentations and expert advice on virtually every aspect of the union construction business, but TAUC also used the occasion to honor the industry's outstanding safety efforts and announce an exciting new cooperative agreement with the U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs. Here's a quick wrap-up - click on the links for more information:

James J. Willis Craftperson of the Year: Roger Jayne became the first Boilermaker to win the prestigious Craftperson award. Roger, a general foreman with Local #13 in Philadelphia, won for his hard work on two consecutive outages at the PPL Brunner Island Power Station in York Haven, Pa. in the spring and fall of 2009. He was nominated for the award by Minnotte Contracting Corporation, which completed the work for PPL.

Thomas J. Reynolds Awards: This year's winners of the annual Thomas J. Reynolds Awards for Excellence in Construction Safety and Health were honored during a special luncheon ceremony. The awards recognize companies that achieve a zero DART (Days Away, Restricted or Transferred) rate in one of four categories.

TAUC, IEED sign cooperative agreement: Also at the conference, TAUC signed a cooperative agreement with the Office of Indian Energy and Economic Development (IEED), part of the U.S. Department of the Interior's Bureau of Indian Affairs, designed to provide crucial new careers for Native Americans and Native Alaskans in the construction industry - and expand work opportunities for union contractors at the same time.

Governance: Leadership changes were also announced in Phoenix. Two new members were elected to the Board of Directors, and Gary Bohn, senior advisor to Kiewit Power Constructors, was named the new Labor Committee Chairman. Outgoing chairman Bud Burns of J.J. White was honored by TAUC President Bob Santillo for his service.

Next year: TAUC also announced the location for next year's Leadership Conference: The Greenbrier Resort in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia! Mark your calendars for May 10-13, 2011!
