OSHA launches national survey on employers' safety practices

June 1 2011

OSHA last month announced it has initiated a survey of 19,000 private sector employers to help the agency better design future safety rules and assist in compliance and outreach efforts.

The Baseline Survey of Safety and Health Practices asks questions about workplace safety and health management practices and will be sent to private sector employers of all sizes and across all industries under OSHA’s jurisdiction.

“Questions include whether respondents already have a safety management system, whether they perform annual inspections, who manages safety at their establishments and what kinds of hazards they encounter at their facilities,” OSHA said. “Participation in the survey is voluntary.”

The agency added that its contractor, Eastern Research Group, will manage the survey collection process. The results will remain anonymous and cannot be used for enforcement, OSHA said.
