Bill Brown, CEO of Ben Hur Construction Co. and past president of TAUC, recently had a letter published in the Wall Street Journal on the subject of worker training and a perceived U.S. “skills gap.”
Brown was responding to an article by U.S. Senators Patty Murray and Mary Landrieu that claimed many employers want to hire more workers, and as many as three million jobs currently remain unfilled because they can’t find qualified employees with the right skill sets. Brown calls this a “troubling misconception,” and adds, “The senators would score some high marks with roughly 40,000 literate, skilled, unemployed or under-employed ironworkers if they were to let us know exactly where these three million jobs are.”
