Mass layoffs in the construction sector — defined as 50 or more workers from a single employer – rose in July after declining the previous month, according to the most recent numbers available from the government’s Bureau of Labor Statistics.
There were 118 mass construction layoffs in July, up from just 84 in June but still down from May’s total of 137. As a result, initial claimants for unemployment insurance also rose, from 6,847 in June to 8,990 in July.
