Drug-Free Workplace Alliance Renewal Signing

December 20 2006
Safety and Health

TAUC was present at the Department of Labor?s October 19th signing event to renew the agreement between the Drug Free Workplace Alliance which supports the DOL?s Alcohol and Drug Free Workplace Program. The Drug Free Workplace Alliance that includes TAUC, DOL sectors, construction associations, and international unions is focused on improving worker safety and health in the construction industry.

October 16-22, 2006 marked the first-ever Drug-Free Work Week, and employers and workers across the country were encouraged to participate. The purpose of Drug-Free Work Week was to educate employers, employees and the general public about the importance of being drug-free as a component of improving workplace safety and health and to encourage workers with alcohol and drug problems to seek help. Each and every group in the alliance made great efforts to promote Drug Free Work Week to its members and constituents. TAUC mailed hardhat stickers and posters to each of its contractor members and sent each NMAPC signatory contractor the Drug Free Workplace poster.

Many of TAUC’s affiliated unions already have drug testing programs in place. The Ironworkers and Boilermakers, to name a few, have found that these programs have greatly reduced the number of workers who test positive for drug use. The Iron Workers said that out of ten thousand workers tested only 1% were positive.
