Stephen F. Kelly, Assistant General President of the United Association international union, retired June 30.
“Brother Kelly is one of the finest labor leaders I have known,” said UA General President Bill Hite. “It has been an honor to work side by side with him over the years, and especially during his time as our Assistant General President.”
Kelly has been a member of the UA since 1969. He started out working as a pipefitter and welder in the Youngstown, Ohio area and later in Arizona. Over the ensuing decades, he moved up the ranks, and was elected as BUsiness Manager of Local 230 in San Diego in 1989. In 1997, he accepted a position with the UA as Special Representative; in 2001, he was elected to the position of International Representative; and in 2004, became the UA’s Assistant General President.
“Stephen will be greatly missed — not just by his friends and coworkers at the UA, but by the entire union construction industry,” said TAUC CEO Steve Lindauer.
Succeeding Kelly as Assistant General President is Mike Pleasant, who formerly served as Administrative Assistant to the General President. Pleasant also serves as President and Labor Co-Chair of the National Maintenance Agreements Policy Committee, Inc. (NMAPC), and will continue to serve in that role.
“Having worked closely with Mike over the past several years, I can’t think of anyone better able to step into the role of Assistant General President,” added Lindauer, who also serves as Impartial Secretary of the NMAPC.
