Earlier this morning, the White House announced an overarching program to target opioid overdoses across industries. The White House Challenge to Save Lives from Overdose highlights efforts in the construction industry undertaken by strategic alliance partners at TAUC, MCAA, NECA , and the SMACNA.

The announcement reads,

Mechanical Contractors Association of America (MCAA), National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA), Sheet Metal and Air Conditioning Contractors’ National Association (SMACNA), and The Association of Union Constructors (TAUC) represent over 10,000 union contractors, providing employment for hundreds of thousands of skilled trade workers in the United States. These organizations, in collaboration with union partners, trained thousands of workers on substance use disorder and overdose prevention and distributed a limited quantity of naloxone. MCAA, NECA, SMACNA, and TAUC endorse having naloxone at all construction sites and urge employers to make the lifesaving medication available to their workforce.

The continuation of long-term efforts from the strategic alliance, the alliance reinforces our commitment to solve our industry’s opioid overdose epidemic, now with the help of White House staff. Meetings have been taking place centered on a coordinated industry effort to increase access to naloxone, and continue to be held to monitor progress.

TAUC Safety Director Alex Kopp, integral to the strategic alliance, spoke about the steps being taken, saying “TAUC commends the White House’s commitment to saving lives from overdose. TAUC and our safety alliance partners believe It’s crucial to address this public health crisis comprehensively and assist with solutions, like ensuring naloxone is easily accessible to construction sites across the US. Together we can make significant strides in combating substance abuse as a whole.”

TAUC and its strategic alliance partners will continue to combat the opioid crisis head on.
